President

Brian Bowers

PE, CCM

Mr. Bowers joined the firm in 1987 as a Construction Manager and has been the President since 1997. Mr. Bowers graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Mechanics. He also received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from University of Hawaii and a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Studies at the U.S. Army War College.

Mr. Bowers is a Certified Construction Manager (CCM) by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and is a registered Professional Civil Engineer in Hawaii, Virginia, and Guam. In 2013 he was selected as the Engineer of the Year for the State of Hawaii by the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers.

Mr. Bowers is a Certified Value Engineer by the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE) and has completed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Construction Quality Control Management (CQCM) Course for Contractors. Additionally, he has been an active member in the following organizations:

  • Construction Management Association of America, Hawaii Chapter
  • American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii, Past President, President Elect, Past Secretary, Treasurer

Along with Vice President of the firm, Dexter Kubota, Mr. Bowers won the 2011 award for the Hawaii State Small Business Persons of the Year.

Dexter Kubota

PE

Mr. Kubota joined the firm in 1988 as a civil engineer and is currently the Vice President and Principal. Mr. Kubota graduated from University of Santa Clara with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Civil Engineering. He also received a Master of Science, specializing in Civil and Environmental Engineering, from University of Washington.

Mr. Kubota is a Certified Value Engineer by the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE) and is also a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii, as well as in California.

Mr. Kubota has been enthusiastically involved in a variety of professional organizations-serving as the State President and National Director of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and President of the American Public Works Association (APWA). Additionally, he has been an active member in the following organizations:

  • Hawaii Council of Engineering Society (HCES)

Mark Nakao

AIA

Mr. Nakao joined the firm in 2000 as an architect and is currently a Principal. He graduated from University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Architecture.

Mr. Nakao is a registered architect in Hawaii and has played an important role in successfully completing over 600 AE projects with Bowers + Kubota. Roles include project manager, construction manager, principal architect, project architect, and quality control manager.

Mr. Nakao has completed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Construction Quality Control Management (CQCM) Course for Contractors as well as the OSHA Construction Safety Course. He has also been an active member in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) -Honolulu Chapter.

Eric Iwamoto

PE, CCM, LEED AP

Mr. Iwamoto joined the firm in 2001 as a civil engineer and is currently a Principal. Mr. Iwamoto graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii, as well as in California. In addition, Mr. Iwamoto is a Certified Construction Manager by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).
Under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), he is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) and has a Class B General Contractor’s license.

Mr. Iwamoto has also completed the following courses:

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Construction Quality Control Management (CQCM) Course for Contractors

Mr. Choi joined the team in 2004 as a project engineer and is currently a Principal with the firm. He graduated from University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Civil Engineering.
Mr. Choi is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii and is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Mr. Choi also has the following training and experience:

Aaron Akau

Mr. Akau, former President of Belt Collins Hawaii, joined B+K in 2020 and is currently a Principal. He graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Architecture. Mr. Akau is a registered Landscape Architect in Hawaii, Guam, and Commonweath of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI).

Kurt Kunimune

PE

Mr. Kunimune joined the firm in 2000 as a civil engineer and is currently a Senior Associate. He graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He later graduated from University of Washington with a Master of Business Administration.

Mr. Kunimune is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii and Washington State. Other qualifications include:

Ms. Marugame joined the firm in 2006 as an office manager and is currently a Senior Associate with the firm. Ms. Marugame graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Business Administration, specializing in accounting.

Kevin Funasaki

Mr. Funasaki joined the firm in 2008 and is currently a Senior Associate with the firm. He is a registered architect in the state of Hawaii and graduated from University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Design. Mr. Funasaki’s other professional qualifications include:

  • Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s coursework of “Airport Development for the Next 50 Years: Planning and Design of World-Class Airports and Passenger Terminals.”

Amy Matsushima

Ms. Matsushima joined B+K in 2012 as our Human Resources/Recruiting Manager, bringing with her over 23 years of HR experience. As a Senior Associate of the firm she ensures competitive and dynamic HR benefits and programs for our employees. Ms. Matsushima’s philosophy is that HR is a strategic partner in helping to grow the business. She treats every employee as her clients, providing the best service she can offer.

Mr. Lee joined the firm in 2015 as an architect and is currently a Senior Associate with the firm. He graduated from University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Architecture.

Mr. Lee is a registered architect in Hawaii and Atlanta; holds a certification as a Professional Interior Designer  (NCIDQ); and certified  LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). He is also an active member of the American Institute of Architect (AIA) Hawaii Chapter and the American Correctional Association (ACA).

Ms. Teruya joined Bowers + Kubota in 2011 and is currently a Senior Associate with the firm. Ms. Teruya graduated from University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Ms. Pires-Pi’imauna has been with B+K since 2013 as a quality control manager and is currently a Senior Associate with the firm. She graduated with a Master of Science in Construction Management from Arizona State University and a Master of Business Administration in Business Administration from Chaminade University.

Mr. Chuck has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry as a construction scheduler/cost engineer and is currently an Associate with the firm. He has been involved in all phases of capital improvement projects including its planning, programming, and budgeting and understands the complexities of large multi-year programs. Mr. Chuck’s professional registrations include: Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Planning and Scheduling Professional (PSP), and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Building Design + Construction Discipline (LEED AP BD+C).

Mr. Keeley graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography (with a GIS emphasis).
