Brian Bowers

PE, CCM

Mr. Bowers joined the firm in 1987 as a Construction Manager and has been the President of the firm since 1997. Mr. Bowers graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Mechanics. He also received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii and a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Studies at the U.S. Army War College.

Mr. Bowers is a Certified Construction Manager (CCM) by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and is a registered Professional Civil Engineer in Hawaii, Virginia, and Guam. In 2013 he was selected as the Engineer of the Year for the State of Hawaii by the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers.

Mr. Bowers is a Certified Value Engineer by the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE) and has completed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Construction Quality Control Management (CQCM) Course for Contractors. Additionally, he has been an active member in the following organizations:

  • Construction Management Association of America, Hawaii Chapter
  • American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii, Past President, President Elect, Past Secretary, Treasurer

Along with Vice President of the firm, Dexter Kubota, Mr. Bowers won the 2011 award for the Hawaii State Small Business Persons of the Year.

Dexter Kubota

PE

Mr. Kubota joined the firm in 1988 as a civil engineer and is currently the Vice President and Principal of the firm. Mr. Kubota graduated from the University of Santa Clara with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Civil Engineering. He also received a Master of Science, specializing in Civil and Environmental Engineering, from the University of Washington.

Mr. Kubota is a Certified Value Engineer by the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE) and is also a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii, as well as in California.

Mr. Kubota has been enthusiastically involved in a variety of professional organizations-serving as the State President and National Director of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and President of the American Public Works Association (APWA). Additionally, he has been an active member in the following organizations:

Mark Nakao

AIA

Mr. Nakao joined the firm in 2000 as an architect and is currently a Principal Architect of the firm. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Architecture.

Mr. Nakao is a registered architect in Hawaii and has played an important role in successfully completing over 600 AE projects with Bowers + Kubota. Roles include project manager, construction manager, principal architect, project architect, and quality control manager.

Mr. Nakao has completed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Construction Quality Control Management (CQCM) Course for Contractors as well as the OSHA Construction Safety Course. He has also been an active member in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) -Honolulu Chapter.

Joelle DuBois

PE, CCM

Ms. DuBois joined the firm in 1998 as a civil engineer and is currently a Principal of the firm. She graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Civil Engineering. Ms. DuBois is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii. Since she has worked at Bowers + Kubota, Ms. Dubois has helped with over 100 A/E projects serving as either the project manager or project engineer, with a specialization in transportation infrastructure.
Ms. DuBois is a member of the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers, currently acting as the treasurer, and is a Certified Construction Manager by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).

Eric Iwamoto

PE, CCM, LEED AP

Mr. Iwamoto joined the firm in 2001 as a civil engineer and is currently a Principal of the firm. Mr. Iwamoto graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii, as well as in California. In addition, Mr. Iwamoto is a Certified Construction Manager by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).
Under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), he is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) and has a Class B General Contractor’s license.

Mr. Iwamoto has also completed the following courses:

Kurt Kunimune

Mr. Kunimune joined the firm in 2000 as a civil engineer and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. He graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He later graduated from the University of Washington with a Master of Business Administration.

Mr. Kunimune is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii and Washington State. Other qualifications include:

Steve Ientile

Mr. Ientile joined the firm in 2001 as a project manager and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. He possesses a wide range of skills that has helped him fulfill various positions throughout many AE projects. Project roles have included project manager, construction manager, inspector, project engineer, and quality control manager.
Mr. Ientile has completed two OSHA training courses, and has also received the Hawaii Department of Transportation Field Testing and Sampling (MTRB) Certificate.

Dawn Marugame

Ms. Marugame joined the firm in 2006 as an office manager and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. Ms. Marugame graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Business Administration, specializing in accounting.

Mr. Choi joined the team in 2004 as a project engineer and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Civil Engineering.
Mr. Choi is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii and is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Mr. Choi also has the following training and experience:

Mr. Young joined the firm in 2008 as a project engineer and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Seattle University.
Mr. Young is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in Hawaii as well as in Washington State. Mr. Young also has the following training and experience:

Kevin Funasaki

Mr. Funasaki joined the firm in 2008 and is currently a Senior Associate of the firm. He is a registered architect in the state of Hawaii and graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Design. Mr. Funasaki’s other professional qualifications include:

He then dis coursework for a Master of Business Administration from Boston University. Mr. Perron is a licensed EPA Project Designer as well as an EPA Project Manager in the state of Hawaii. He has won the U.S. Army’s R.B. Maynor’s Quality Assurance Award for the US Army MEDCOM on two occasions. Mr. Perron’s other qualifications include:

Mr. Yasutake is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) and a Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP).

Jeffrey Chuck

Mr. Chuck has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry as a construction scheduler/cost engineer and is currently an Associate with the firm. He has been involved in all phases of capital improvement projects including its planning, programming, and budgeting and understands the complexities of large multi-year programs. Mr. Chuck’s professional registrations include: Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Planning and Scheduling Professional (PSP), and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Building Design + Construction Discipline (LEED AP BD+C).

Derek Nisly

CCM

Mr. Nisly joined B+K in 2007 as a Project Engineer and is now an Associate with the firm, working out of our Maui office. His wealth of knowledge in construction is demonstrated by his extensive experience in managing State of Hawaii Department of Transportation projects. Other professional qualifications that he holds are the HDOT-Field Testing and Sampling (MTRB) Certification; OSHA, 10 Hour Construction Safety Course; Pavement Preservation Training Course.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Mr. Nisly and his wife have recently become mentors in the Kids Hope mentoring program for at risk kids. They are paired with a child from the 1st grade and follow them through the 5th grade. While school is in session they will be developing one-on-one relationships by reading, talking, playing, helping with homework, and listening. By spending just one hour per week, they are helping these kids feel loved and valued, which will help the child learn to grow and succeed.
