Construction Management Services were provided for the reconstruction of Kamehameha Avenue between Puunene Avenue and Hana Highway. Improvements included a concrete ultra-thin white topping (UTW) and cement treated recycled base pavement section; replacing traffic loop detectors; installing signs; pavement striping and markers; and other incidental items. Having previously been a part of the design and construction of the Haleakala Highway UTW, B+K assisted the County of Maui in implementing this groundbreaking technology, as well as incorporating recycled cement treated base into the full depth reconstruction of Kamehameha Avenue. To accommodate the high traffic volume in this busy business district of Kahului, the overlay was designed to allow vehicular traffic within 24 hours of placement. B+K communicated closely with the community, local businesses, Maui Bus and emergency services to keep traffic disruptions to a minimum, with full road closures done in block by block phases. B+K worked with the County to ensure this project provided other public benefits, including the use of recycled material. Not only did the use of recycled material lessen the duration of the project, it was also a dramatic reduction in the use of non-renewable resources.
